Mand exponent Batool Begum
Batool Begum, a celebrated Mand and bhajan singer from Rajasthan, is hailed as a living legend of Indian culture for her extraordinary contributions to folk and devotional music. Born in Kerap village of Nagaur district into the Mirasi community, she began singing bhajans at just eight and persevered despite social and economic challenges.
Her powerful renditions of Mand, a traditional Rajasthani form, have taken her to stages in more than 55 countries, earning global recognition and honours, including the Nari Shakti Puraskar and the Padma Shri in 2025. Batool’s music transcends religious and cultural boundaries, promoting unity and harmony.

Halima Khatun fights poverty
Halima Khatun, from a small village in the Sundarbans, has become a powerful voice against poverty and patriarchy by championing women’s rights in her community. Despite early criticism for pursuing higher education, she became the first woman from her village to attend Calcutta University, a step that sparked her lifelong activism. Halima helped form the Hasnabad Hingalganj Muslim Mahila Sangh, uniting over 2,000 women across 15 panchayats.
Her efforts have led to scholarships for girls, prevention of child marriages, and legal identity for workers. Known for fearless interventions, she continues expanding her movement to empower women across West Bengal.
