Nadendla Bhaskar Rao, who briefly served as Chief Minister in 1984 after leading a political revolt against N. T. Rama Rao, passed away in Hyderabad on Wednesday. He was 90.

According to a statement from the Jana Sena Party, Bhaskar Rao died at a super-speciality hospital while undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.

His son, Nadendla Manohar, is a senior leader of the Jana Sena Party and currently serves as a minister in Andhra Pradesh.

Bhaskar Rao had earlier served as a minister in N. T. Rama Rao’s cabinet before rebelling against him and assuming the chief ministership in 1984. However, his government lasted only about a month before NTR returned to power following the massive “Save Democracy” movement led by the Telugu Desam Party.

N. Chandrababu Naidu had reportedly played a significant role in the campaign to restore NTR to office.

Later in his career, Bhaskar Rao was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998 on a Indian National Congress ticket. In 2019, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of Amit Shah.
