Tiruchirappalli
A grand Jallikattu competition is being held at Kajamalai in Tiruchirappalli on Wednesday, drawing large crowds as 750 bulls and over 500 bull tamers take part in the traditional sport.
The event began around 8 am and has been progressing in a vibrant and energetic atmosphere. Bulls from Tiruchirappalli and neighbouring districts have been registered for the competition, while hundreds of trained tamers are actively participating, attempting to embrace and control the bulls amid cheers from spectators.
Organisers said prizes are being awarded to both successful bull tamers and bull owners. Attractive rewards, including a car and an agricultural tractor, have been announced for the best-performing bull tamer and the owner of the best Jallikattu bull.
Adequate police personnel have been deployed at the venue to ensure public safety and the smooth conduct of the event.
Jallikattu, a traditional bull-taming sport deeply rooted in Tamil culture, is usually organised during the Pongal harvest festival in Tamil Nadu. The sport involves participants holding on to a bull’s hump for a specified distance or duration as the animal attempts to break free.
