Disruption in both houses of Parliament continued for the second day following opposition protests over inflation and hike in Goods and Services Tax on essential items.

The recommendations on Goods and Services Tax rates that were made during the 47th GST Council meeting held in June came into effect from Monday.

Both the Rajya Shabha and Lok Sabha were adjourned for half a day amid protests and sloganeering by opposition MPs over the issue.

A joint opposition consisting the Congress, AAP and the Shiv Sena created a ruckus forcing the speaker to adjourn the house.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi too joined the opposition protest against the GST hike on essential items, in front of the Gandhi statue in Parliament.

He joined the protest along with other Congress MPs including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, KC Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi.

Opposition leaders said they will keep up the pressure on the government on the issue.

Pre-packaged and labelled pulses, and cereals like rice, wheat, and flour (atta) will now attract 5 per cent GST when branded and packed in a unit container.

Curd, lassi, and puffed rice would attract 5 per cent tax when pre-packaged and labelled.
