Iconic singer Zubeen Garg, in his last podcast interview with eminent litterateur Rita Choudhury before his tragic death in Singapore, said he loved to feed people much more than he eats.
Even in death, Zubeen continued to feed the poor. Piles of pitha pona (traditional Assamese cakes), curd, sweets, rice, dal, paneer, kheer and bottled water, which were left over after the Ardhya Shradha on Monday, were collected from the singer’s Guwahati residence and distributed in a late-night food drive which went on till 3 am on Tuesday.
It was a tough task for the People in Serving Assam (PISA), an NGO, to collect various food items from Kahilipara’s residence and then distribute the items among the poor within a very short time. Writer and journalist Seema Hussain, the founder of PISA, told Awaz-The Voice that the NGO was informed about the huge quantity of leftover food by Zubeen’s family at 11 pm on Monday.

“It was difficult to mobilise people and arrange other logistics to collect food. But I immediately decided in my mind that not a single quantity of food made to feed the people for the eternal peace of the departed soul will be wasted.
“We arranged two vehicles and some volunteers to collect the food and distribute it among the poor and hungry,” Hussain said.

Seema Hussain says there are a lot of people sleeping hungry every night. “Whenever the PISA gets a call from a wedding party or any event where food is surplus, we collect the excess food and distribute it immediately among the poor and the hungry. This time it was from the Ardhya Shradha ceremony of none other than our heartthrob Zubeen Garg. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” she said.
