Himanta Biswa Sarma sworn in for second consecutive term

Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as chief minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Tuesday, marking the formation of the third successive government led by the BJP-headed NDA in the northeastern state.

Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office to Sarma and four newly inducted ministers at a grand ceremony held at the Veterinary College Field in Guwahati.

The four legislators who took oath as ministers were:

  • Rameshwar Teli of the Bharatiya Janata Party
  • Ajanta Neog of the BJP
  • Atul Bora of the Asom Gana Parishad
  • Charan Boro of the Bodoland People's Front

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Sarbananda Sonowal and Pabitra Margherita, along with chief ministers and deputy chief ministers of BJP-ruled states. BJP president Nitin Nabin was also present.

Sarma, dressed in traditional attire with an Assamese gamosa around his neck, took oath in Assamese. Ministers Rameshwar Teli, Ajanta Neog and Atul Bora also took oath in Assamese, while Charan Boro took oath in Bodo.

In a post on X, Sarma said he had taken oath with the blessings of Kamakhya Temple, Srimanta Sankardev and the people of Assam, adding that his government would continue working to fulfil the aspirations of the state.

Ajanta Neog, Atul Bora and Charan Boro were part of Sarma’s previous cabinet, while Rameshwar Teli, a former Union minister, returned to state politics.

The NDA secured a record 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, with the BJP winning 82 seats, while the AGP and BPF won 10 seats each.
