India on Friday voiced serious concern over the increasing number of civilian casualties in Lebanon amid ongoing Israeli strikes, despite a two-week ceasefire aimed at pausing the month-long conflict in West Asia. It reiterated that the protection of civilians remains a top priority.

Speaking at an inter-ministerial briefing in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the situation as “very disturbing,” particularly in light of India’s long-standing commitment to peace and stability in the region. He noted that around 1,000 Indian nationals are currently residing in Lebanon.

Jaiswal said India is troubled by reports of significant civilian casualties and highlighted the country’s role as a troop contributor to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which is involved in maintaining peace and security in the region.

He emphasised that India has consistently called for the protection of civilian lives during conflicts and stressed the importance of adhering to international law, as well as respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.

The spokesperson added that the government is closely monitoring the evolving situation and that the Indian Embassy in Lebanon is in regular contact with the Indian community to ensure their safety.

These developments come amid uncertainty surrounding a fragile ceasefire understanding between the United States and Iran. While Tehran maintains that the truce includes a halt to Israeli military operations in Lebanon, both Washington and Israel have stated that their actions against Hezbollah targets are not covered under the agreement, complicating diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam is expected to visit Washington, DC in the coming days following Israel’s call for direct negotiations with Lebanon, according to media reports.

Despite the ceasefire, Israeli strikes targeting Hezbollah positions have continued, with Lebanese authorities reporting heavy casualties in recent attacks, raising fears of further escalation.

Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that there is no ceasefire in Lebanon and affirmed that military operations against Hezbollah would continue until security objectives are achieved. He also indicated that the Israeli Cabinet has been directed to pursue direct talks with the Lebanese government aimed at disarming Hezbollah and working towards a long-term peace arrangement.
