India on Wednesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah to the Ministry of External Affairs over concerns related to the security of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka following the receipt of a threat.

The move comes amid recent anti-India remarks by National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah, who reportedly made a public speech threatening to isolate India’s northeastern states and provide refuge to separatist groups in the event of instability in Bangladesh. Abdullah is known for his strong anti-India stance.

The MEA conveyed India’s concerns regarding the safety and security of its diplomatic mission and personnel in Dhaka, sources said.

Earlier, Bangladesh’s Victory Day was marked with a cultural programme at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi. Addressing the event, High Commissioner Hamidullah emphasised Bangladesh’s commitment to fulfilling the aspirations of its people, particularly the younger generation, highlighting the country’s young demographic profile.

He underlined that Bangladesh and India share a mutually beneficial relationship rooted in prosperity, peace and regional security, stressing the importance of mutual interdependence between the two neighbours.

“The whole of Bangladesh is committed to fulfilling the aspirations of its people, especially the younger generation. We believe our relationship with India is in our shared interest, with a focus on prosperity, peace and security in the region,” Hamidullah said.

Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar extended greetings to Bangladesh on Victory Day, posting on X, “Greetings to Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Touhid Hossain, the Interim Government and the people of Bangladesh on Bijoy Dibosh.”
