Inspector General of Police for the Kashmir Zone, V K Birdi, on Wednesday conducted a comprehensive review of security arrangements in the Valley ahead of upcoming events, including New Year celebrations, officials said.

According to a police spokesperson, the IGP chaired a security assessment meeting at the Police Control Room in Srinagar, where senior officers briefed him on existing deployment plans and preparedness measures.

During the meeting, Birdi directed officers to ensure that all security preparations are finalised well in advance. He stressed the need to reinforce checkpoints, particularly during night hours, and called for heightened vigilance at sensitive and vulnerable locations across Kashmir.

The IGP emphasised strict monitoring of elements that could pose a threat to public order and underlined the importance of maintaining a high level of alertness. He also instructed officers to intensify area domination efforts within their respective jurisdictions.

With an anticipated increase in tourist movement ahead of the New Year, Birdi highlighted the necessity of layered security arrangements at prominent tourist destinations. These include cable car facilities, forest routes, busy tourist hubs and key approach roads. He called for coordinated patrolling, continuous surveillance and seamless sharing of real-time intelligence among security units.

Taking note of weather forecasts, the IGP asked officers to ensure that both personnel and equipment remain operationally prepared to deal with weather-related challenges, while continuing to provide uninterrupted security and public assistance.
