Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “most corrupt chief minister” in the country and alleging that he, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is facilitating large-scale transfer of land to corporate entities.
Addressing an election rally in support of Congress candidate Raton Engti, Gandhi claimed that vast tracts of land in Assam have been taken from local communities and handed over to big industrial groups. He described the situation as a “land ATM”, alleging that public resources are being diverted for the benefit of select businesses.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha further accused the state government of operating through syndicates and alleged that the chief minister remains under pressure due to corruption-related issues.
Referring to the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away last year, Gandhi said the artist symbolised the cultural and social unity of Assam. He promised that, if voted to power, the Congress would ensure justice in connection with his death within 100 days.
Highlighting ideological differences, Gandhi said the Congress believes in decentralisation of power, arguing that governance in Assam should be driven by local communities rather than decisions taken from Delhi. He stressed that the state’s diversity—across communities, languages and traditions—should be preserved.
He also pledged to fully implement Article 244(A) of the Constitution, which would grant greater autonomy to regions such as Karbi Anglong and other Sixth Schedule areas, allowing them to be governed by local institutions.
Raising concerns about the India-US trade arrangement, Gandhi alleged that the agreement favours American interests and could harm Indian farmers, traders and small businesses. He claimed that the deal could open up domestic markets to foreign players and place India in a weaker negotiating position.
Outlining the party’s promises, Gandhi spoke about a set of “guarantees” that include direct financial assistance to women, support for women entrepreneurs, health insurance coverage for families, and welfare schemes for senior citizens. He also assured permanent land rights for indigenous communities.
