The Punjab Police on Friday arrested Amritpal Singh Mehron, the main accused in the murder of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, after he was deported to India from the Middle East, officials said.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said Mehron was apprehended at Indira Gandhi International Airport in the early hours of Friday following coordinated efforts between state police, central agencies, and the Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell.
Kumari, 30, popularly known on Instagram as “Kamal Kaur Bhabhi”, was found dead in June 2025 in an abandoned car in Bathinda. Investigations revealed that she was allegedly abducted and murdered by Mehron along with his associates.
Police had earlier arrested three co-accused, including Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, who reportedly claimed that the killing was carried out over content they considered “immoral” and offensive to community sentiments.
According to police, Mehron, a resident of Moga and a self-styled radical Sikh leader, fled the country shortly after the crime. A lookout circular had been issued against him, and his location was eventually traced to the Middle East, leading to his detention and deportation.
Officials said that after committing the crime, the accused attempted to evade legal proceedings, but sustained coordination between agencies ensured his return to India.
In a purported video that surfaced after the murder, Mehron was seen justifying the killing and issuing warnings to other social media influencers against posting “objectionable content”.
Police added that he had also allegedly threatened other women influencers in Punjab prior to his arrest.
