Manipur Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh on Monday said the state government is committed to enhancing the strength and capabilities of the police force to help restore lasting peace in the violence-hit state, while urging citizens to avoid violent protests and adopt peaceful means of expression.

Addressing a programme organised for the flagging off of 477 newly inducted vehicles for the Manipur Police, the chief minister said maintaining peace in the state would not be possible without a strong and efficient police force.

Singh praised the role played by Manipur Police personnel during the prolonged ethnic unrest, noting that many officers had taken significant risks and even laid down their lives while trying to control the situation.

“Manipur Police personnel carried a major responsibility in tackling and preventing violence in the state and made immense sacrifices. The Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF, BSF and other security agencies also contributed equally in maintaining law and order after the unfortunate incidents of violence,” he said.

Manipur has witnessed ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 260 people and displacement of thousands.

The chief minister reiterated that the state government would extend all possible assistance to modernise and strengthen the police force.

Referring to incidents during protests following the killing of two children in a bomb attack in Bishnupur district’s Tronglaobi area, Singh expressed concern over attacks on security personnel by some agitators.

“Instead of resorting to peaceful demonstrations and dialogue, some youths targeted security forces during the agitation. I appeal to everyone not to indulge in violence,” he said.

Later, in a post on X, Singh said he had flagged off 477 police vehicles at the 1st MR Parade Ground in the presence of Home Minister K Govindas Singh, legislators, senior police officials and the Commissioner (Home).

He said the vehicles had been procured under a police modernisation initiative aimed at improving mobility and operational efficiency.

“Today marks a historic occasion for the state. This major addition to police mobility and operational infrastructure will strengthen law enforcement and improve public service delivery across Manipur,” the chief minister said.

He added that the government remained fully committed to equipping the police force with modern infrastructure and resources to ensure effective policing, public safety and the maintenance of law and order across the state.
