Governor VK Singh on Monday called upon people to uphold the Mizo value of 'Tlawmngaihna' -- the spirit of selflessness, compassion and voluntary service, while stressing the need for collective action against drug abuse.

Greeting people on the 91st raising day of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), Singh said the organisation has remained at the forefront of community service since its establishment.

He commended the organisation for its continued efforts in assisting the needy, preserving and promoting Mizo culture, traditions and heritage, and supporting the government in implementing various public welfare initiatives across the state.

The governor urged people to foster unity among different sections of society, respect elders and remain connected to their rich cultural heritage.

Expressing concern over the growing threat of drug and substance abuse, Singh called for concerted efforts to combat the menace and ensure a secure and prosperous future for the younger generation.

The influential YMA marked its raising day with functions, sports and cultural events across the state.

YMA branches organised cleanliness drives in localities, villages and streets, besides extending relief assistance to orphanages, rehabilitation centres and economically weaker sections.

Central YMA (CYMA) president R Lalngheta urged members of the organisation to strengthen their commitment to community service and intensify the fight against drug trafficking, describing drug dealers as enemies of families, communities and the state.

Established on June 15, 1935, as the Young Lushai Association (YLA), the organisation was renamed the Young Mizo Association in 1947. It was initiated by Welsh Christian missionaries.
