Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday announced that the state government will introduce the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill during the upcoming monsoon session of the Legislative Assembly and expressed confidence that the legislation would be passed.

Speaking to reporters after a tribute ceremony for former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kailash Nath Katju on his birth anniversary at the Assembly premises, Yadav said the government was preparing to bring several significant proposals before the House, including the UCC legislation.

"The Uniform Civil Code Bill will be presented during the monsoon session. With the blessings of Baba Mahakal, it will be successfully passed," the chief minister said.

The monsoon session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly is scheduled to begin on July 20 and continue for five days.

Yadav noted that the government intends to place a number of important and contemporary issues before legislators during the session. Apart from the UCC Bill, the House is also expected to consider the first supplementary budget for the financial year 2026–27, along with various legislative proposals and amendments.

Earlier this month, the chief minister had indicated that the state was moving towards implementing a Uniform Civil Code and that the process was progressing rapidly.

To facilitate consultations on the issue, the government has constituted a six-member committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge. The panel has been travelling across different districts to gather views and suggestions from people belonging to various communities and religious groups.

According to Yadav, the government intends to review the committee's recommendations before finalising the framework for implementation.

"We want the Uniform Civil Code to be implemented in Madhya Pradesh at the earliest after the committee submits its report. There is a broad desire within the state to move in that direction," he said.

The state government has also launched a dedicated website to encourage public participation and collect suggestions from citizens regarding the proposed code.

Meanwhile, the opposition Congress has voiced concerns over the proposal. Party leaders have argued that certain provisions of a Uniform Civil Code could affect the distinct customs, traditions and rights enjoyed by tribal communities under constitutional protections.

Former minister and Congress state media department head Mukesh Nayak alleged that the government was attempting to create divisions under the guise of promoting equality and cautioned against measures that could impact the cultural identity of tribal populations.

The proposed legislation is likely to trigger extensive debate during the Assembly session, with both the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress expected to present sharply contrasting views on its implications.
