Irfan Pathan believes the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) could be the final season for former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Pathan said CSK would feel incomplete without Dhoni and suggested the 2026 season might mark the veteran’s final appearance in the franchise’s iconic yellow jersey.
“CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey, and it's tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him. His presence in the dressing room will help bring everyone together,” Pathan said, adding that it remains uncertain how many matches Dhoni will play.
Pathan also spoke about the newly traded player Sanju Samson joining the CSK setup. According to him, Samson will benefit from being part of the team’s leadership group, alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.
He said the franchise is grooming multiple players for the future and Dhoni’s guidance will play a key role in shaping them.
Dhoni, who has led CSK to five IPL titles, is set to represent the franchise again at the age of 44 in the upcoming season. He has featured in every edition of the IPL since its inception in 2008.
Pathan also addressed the departure of veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been traded to the Rajasthan Royals.
He said young all-rounder Prashant Veer from Uttar Pradesh could potentially fill the void left by Jadeja.
Recalling Jadeja’s early years, Pathan noted that the player gained confidence during his initial stint with Rajasthan Royals under the guidance of Shane Warne, which helped shape his career.
Pathan added that CSK’s environment makes it easier for young players to develop.
“With experienced players like MS Dhoni around and Stephen Fleming as coach, the team keeps things simple for youngsters. That helps them perform even in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL,” he said.
