Nitin Nabin on Saturday paid tribute to social reformer Jyotirao Phule on his birth anniversary, saying his contributions to women’s empowerment and social reform remain a source of inspiration.
Speaking at the BJP headquarters, Nabin said Phule’s efforts to challenge regressive practices such as sati and promote education for women and girls are still remembered across the country. He noted that Phule’s role in establishing the first school for girls and his campaign against social evils continue to hold relevance even today.
Phule, born on April 11, 1827, in Maharashtra, is regarded as one of India’s leading reformers who worked for equality, education and social justice.
Nabin also linked the Centre’s initiatives to Phule’s vision, saying Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted women’s dignity, safety and self-reliance through programmes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
