Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the passing of veteran politician and former Union Minister Mukul Roy, remembering him as an experienced leader committed to public service.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said Roy’s long political journey and dedication to social service would be remembered.

“Deeply saddened by the demise of former Union Minister Shri Mukul Roy ji. His vast political experience and dedicated efforts in social service will remain memorable. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti,” Modi said.

Senior Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy passed away at Apollo Hospital in Salt Lake, Kolkata.

His son Subhranshu Roy confirmed that Roy suffered a cardiac arrest at around 1.30 am on Monday.

Following the news, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh paid tribute, recalling Roy as a seasoned politician who commanded respect during his tenure with the Bharatiya Janata Party.

“He was an experienced politician and also served as a Union Minister. When he joined the BJP, he was accorded great respect. From 2019 to 2021, he was with us. Later, he returned to the TMC. For the last two to three years, he was unwell and could not actively participate in politics. I pray that his soul rests in peace,” Ghosh told ANI.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also expressed condolences through a post on X.

“Deeply disheartened to learn about the sad demise of senior politician Shri Mukul Roy. My sincere condolences to his family. Praying that his soul attains eternal peace. Om Shanti,” Adhikari wrote.

Mukul Roy, a former Rajya Sabha MP and Union Railway Minister, was among the founding members of the Trinamool Congress. He joined the BJP in 2017 and contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections from Krishnangar Uttar, defeating TMC candidate and actor Koushani Mukherjee.
