Bangladesh has barred budget carrier SpiceJet from using its airspace due to pending dues, sources said on Thursday.

With Bangladeshi airspace unavailable, the airline has been operating longer routes for some services from Kolkata, including flights to Guwahati and Imphal, resulting in extended flying times.

Responding to queries, a SpiceJet spokesperson said the airline is in regular dialogue with the concerned authorities on operational and procedural matters, including navigation-related charges.
“These are routine industry issues and we are working constructively towards an early resolution. Our flight operations remain unaffected, and we continue to operate scheduled services in line with regulatory requirements,” the spokesperson said.

While the airline did not disclose specifics, sources indicated the restriction was imposed over non-payment of dues. Details regarding the nature and quantum of the outstanding amounts could not be immediately confirmed.

An email sent to the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) seeking comment did not receive an immediate response.

Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 showed that on Thursday, SpiceJet’s Kolkata–Guwahati and Kolkata–Imphal flights avoided Bangladeshi airspace and followed longer routings.

In the markets, shares of SpiceJet were trading nearly 1 per cent lower at ₹16.81 apiece on the BSE during afternoon trade.
