Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan on Friday said the unopposed election of Harivansh as Deputy Chairman was a strong endorsement of the trust and respect he commands across party lines.

Harivansh, a journalist-turned-politician, was elected unopposed to the post for a third consecutive term. The position had fallen vacant after his previous tenure ended on April 9.

Congratulating him, Radhakrishnan said the unanimous support was more than a procedural formality and reflected the confidence members from all sides of the House have in his leadership. He described the third consecutive election to the constitutional office as a rare honour.

The Chairman said Harivansh’s tenure in the Chair has been marked by fairness, composure and commitment to parliamentary traditions. He praised his balanced conduct, calm authority and ability to maintain dignity during difficult and heated debates.

According to Radhakrishnan, moments of consensus such as an unopposed election show that despite political differences, members remain committed to preserving the decorum and institutional strength of Parliament.

He also said Harivansh’s courteous manner and calm smile, even during tense exchanges, had provided stability to the proceedings of the House. Presiding over the Rajya Sabha, he noted, is a demanding responsibility, which Harivansh has handled with patience and impartiality.

Radhakrishnan added that newly elected members would benefit from Harivansh’s guidance in understanding parliamentary conventions and responsibilities. He expressed confidence that Harivansh would continue to discharge the office with dedication and distinction.
