The well-being and security of the Indian community in West Asia is the government’s overriding priority, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Making a suo motu statement in the Lower House amid protests by opposition members demanding a detailed discussion, Jaishankar said Narendra Modi is closely monitoring developments in the region and relevant ministries are coordinating responses.
“Developments in West Asia are a cause of deep concern to all of us,” he said, adding that India supports a return to dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace.
Jaishankar outlined three key principles guiding the government’s approach to the situation.
“We advocate de-escalation, restraint and ensuring the safety of civilians,” he said.
“The wellbeing and security of the Indian community in the region is our overriding priority. We will continue to work with the governments of the region towards that end,” the minister added.
He also emphasised that India’s national interests would remain central to its policy.
“Our national interest, including energy security and trade flows, will always be paramount,” Jaishankar said.
The minister noted that the government had earlier issued a statement urging restraint and emphasised that dialogue and diplomacy remain the best path to reducing tensions.
“It is also imperative that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries is respected,” he said.
