New Delhi
Minutes after Supreme Court gave its go ahead to floor test in the Maharashtra assembly on Wednesday, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced that he is resigning from his post.
He in a way conceded defeat in the face of rebellion in his party and said, "I am resigning as the Chief Minister," as he met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshiyari to submit his resignation.
He also announced his resignation as Member of the Legislative Council.
What will happen now?
By convention, the rebel group headed by Eknath Shinde should stake his claim to form the government provided he has cobbled the numbers, obviously with the support of other parties, notably the BJP.
Though the Supreme Court had ordered to go ahead with the floor test in the Legislative Assembly for the Thackeray government to prove its majority, it remains to be see if that will happen given the fall of the Thackeray government.
According to sources, BJP's Devendra Fardnavis can also claim to form a government though all focus is on the Team Shinde, who arrived in Goa last night
Celebrations have started in the Bharatiya Janata Party camp as some of its leaders and activists were seen raising slogans and distributing sweets at the Taj Palace Hotel in Mumbai.
