Many people dismiss constant fatigue as a normal part of modern life, often blaming late nights, screen time, or hectic schedules. However, sleep specialists caution that persistent exhaustion may reflect deeper issues linked to how the nervous system functions during rest.
Sleep expert Dr Christopher J Allen has highlighted that poor sleep is not always about lifestyle choices alone. Instead, it can indicate a body stuck in a prolonged “survival mode,” where stress keeps the brain and nervous system from fully relaxing—even during sleep.
One of the most common signs is waking up tired despite getting a full night’s rest. According to experts, this may suggest disrupted deep sleep caused by chronic stress, preventing the body from properly recovering overnight.
Similarly, falling asleep too quickly is not always a positive sign. It may point to extreme fatigue or sleep deprivation rather than healthy sleep readiness. On the other hand, spending long hours scrolling on phones despite feeling tired can indicate overstimulation from digital screens, which keeps the brain alert and delays true rest.
Other disrupted patterns include night-time awakenings, often linked to stress-related hormone spikes, and racing thoughts at bedtime when daily worries resurface. Some individuals also report relying on background noise to sleep, which may reflect difficulty tolerating silence due to heightened anxiety.
A common but overlooked pattern is feeling drained during the day yet unusually alert at night, often described as a “second wind.” Experts suggest this may be tied to irregular stress hormone activity affecting natural sleep cycles.

Even prolonged sleep that still leaves a person feeling unrefreshed may signal poor sleep quality rather than insufficient duration, sometimes associated with conditions like fragmented sleep or underlying sleep disorders.
Specialists emphasize that these patterns should not be ignored, as they often reflect how stress, lifestyle habits, and nervous system regulation interact with overall sleep health.
