Prof Shaheen Ara Begum of the Department of Computer Science at the Silchar-based Assam University in southern Assam has been inducted as a senior member of the prestigious Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The US-based IEEE is the top global technical organisation.

The IEEE Senior Member grade is a prestigious, peer-recognised honour bestowed only on individuals who demonstrate significant technical and professional excellence, as well as sustain contributions to the field. It represents a major career milestone, acknowledging both professional accomplishment and leadership within the engineering community.

"I am truly honoured to be recognised by the IEEE, and I deeply appreciate this acknowledgement of my professional expertise and contributions. Only 10 per cent of IEEE’s nearly half a million members hold this grade, which requires extensive experience and reflects professional maturity and significant documented achievements. I value IEEE’s continued support in fostering professional growth and excellence within the engineering and technology community," Prof Begum said.

IEEE is the world's largest technical professional organisation, with over 4 lakh members across 160 countries. Founded in 1963, it is dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity and is a pivotal force in innovation through its publications, conferences and standard development across electrical engineering, electronics and computer science.

Prof Shaheen Ara Begum's achievement brings significant recognition to Assam University, highlighting the calibre of its faculty and their standing on the international stage. According to the university community, her induction into the elite tier of IEEE membership reflects her dedication, expertise and impact in her discipline.
