Mirabai Chanu has set her sights firmly on winning a medal at the Asian Games, calling it the one major goal still missing from her otherwise remarkable career.
A silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, Chanu has long been a leading figure in Indian weightlifting. Her achievements include multiple medals at the World Championships and the Commonwealth Games, but an Asian Games podium finish has so far eluded her.
Speaking after the opening ceremony of the Khelo India Tribal Games, the 31-year-old described the upcoming Asian Games as “unfinished business,” noting that the high level of competition makes the challenge even more meaningful.
Chanu’s journey at the Asian Games has been filled with setbacks. She finished ninth during her debut in 2014 and had to miss the 2018 edition due to a back injury. Her closest attempt came at the 2022 Games, where a hip injury dashed her hopes of securing a medal at a crucial stage.
Now preparing for what could be her final appearance at the continental event, Chanu is determined to complete her medal collection.
However, managing weight categories will be a key challenge in the coming months. She plans to compete in the 48kg division at the upcoming Commonwealth Games before shifting back to the 49kg category for the Asian Games, both of which are scheduled within a short span.
Reflecting on grassroots sports development, Chanu welcomed the launch of the Khelo India Tribal Games, calling it a significant step towards identifying talent from remote and underrepresented regions.
She emphasised that many athletes, particularly from the North-East and tribal belts, possess immense potential but often lack opportunities to showcase their abilities. Initiatives like these, she said, can bridge that gap.
Chanu also highlighted the role of training institutions such as the Sports Authority of India and various Centres of Excellence in nurturing both elite and emerging athletes. She credited these facilities with providing structured coaching, proper nutrition, and world-class infrastructure, enabling sportspersons to compete at the highest level.
