India’s formidable home record in bilateral ODIs faces a stern test when they take on a confident New Zealand side in the decisive third ODI at Holkar Stadium, Indore, on Sunday. The three-match series is currently tied 1-1, setting the stage for a high-stakes finale.

India have not lost a bilateral ODI series at home since March 2019, when Australia overturned a 0-2 deficit to win 3–2. But the Black Caps are determined to end their long winless run in India, having toured for ODIs since 1989 without ever claiming a series victory.

The second ODI in Rajkot highlighted India’s vulnerability in the middle overs, with Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten century exposing difficulties against spin bowling a challenge India must address at the spin-friendly Holkar Stadium. With short boundaries and high-scoring conditions, any lapse could prove costly.

Much of the spotlight will fall on Rohit Sharma, whose aggressive approach at the top has yet to yield big scores in this series. Virat Kohli continues to anchor India’s innings, while KL Rahul is expected to maintain his number five role to manage tempo and rebuild under pressure. The team selection also poses tactical questions: whether to include Nitish Kumar Reddy for seam insurance or Ayush Badoni for spin control, and the potential role of Arshdeep Singh to complement India’s bowling variations.
