Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and legendary Czech javelin thrower Jan Zelezny have mutually decided to end their coaching partnership, bringing to a close a phase marked by technical growth, trust and notable milestones in Chopra’s career.
The collaboration delivered an immediate breakthrough, with Chopra breaching the 90-metre mark for the first time at their debut competition together — a long-awaited achievement that firmly placed him among the elite javelin throwers globally and marked a significant moment for Indian athletics.
Reflecting on the partnership, Chopra said training under Zelezny, whom he had admired since childhood, exposed him to new technical insights and training methods that elevated his approach to the sport.
“Working with Jan opened my eyes to many new ideas. His understanding of technique, rhythm and movement is exceptional, and I learned something from every session we had,” Chopra said.
Zelezny, a multiple-time Olympic and world champion, also spoke positively about their time together, highlighting Chopra’s consistency and progress. He noted that Chopra finished no lower than second in competitions apart from the World Championships, describing it as a strong record. Zelezny added that a back injury suffered days before the Tokyo event affected Chopra’s chances but expressed confidence in his long-term potential.
“He has huge potential for the coming years. Our relationship has been very positive, also on a personal level, and we will certainly remain in touch,” Zelezny said.
Looking ahead, Chopra said he plans to take greater responsibility in shaping his training structure. Having worked with several top coaches over the years, he feels ready to integrate the best elements from each experience, guided by a deeper understanding of his body and technique.
“I began my preparation in early November. The priority is to stay healthy, and I’m excited to compete again soon,” Chopra said, adding that his focus includes the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Olympic Games.
As the partnership concludes, Chopra expressed gratitude and respect for Zelezny, calling their bond one of the most meaningful aspects of the collaboration.
