Days after the assassination of Bangladeshi activist and Inqaib Moncho leader Osman Hadi, another political leader affiliated with the National Citizen Party (NCP) was shot in broad daylight in Khulna, according to local media reports.
Motaleb Shikdar, a leader of Jatiya Sramik Shakti—the labour wing affiliated with the NCP—was critically injured in the shooting and rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital around midday, BD News reported.
According to police, the attack occurred shortly before noon in the Sonadanga area of Khulna city. The shooting was also confirmed by NCP Joint Chief Organiser Mahmudah Mitu, who shared details of the incident on social media along with a photograph of the injured leader.
“The head of NCP’s Khulna division and central organiser of NCP Sramik Shakti, Motaleb Shikdar, was shot a short while ago,” she said in her post.
Police said local residents intervened immediately after the attack and helped transport Shikdar to the hospital for emergency treatment. Security personnel have since been deployed at both the crime scene and the hospital, with investigations currently underway, BD News reported.
The shooting comes amid heightened political unrest in Bangladesh following a fresh wave of violence triggered by the killing of Osman Hadi.
Sharif Osman Hadi was shot at close range on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw in Dhaka’s Bijoynagar area. He was airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical treatment on December 15 but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
