Islamabad
Pakistan is set to host high-stakes talks between the United States and Iran on Friday, aimed at reinforcing a fragile ceasefire and preventing further escalation in West Asia.
The negotiations follow a two-week conditional truce agreed earlier this week, with both sides seeking to convert the temporary halt in hostilities into a more durable peace framework. Delegations from both countries are expected to arrive in Islamabad by Thursday night.
Iran’s envoy to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, confirmed Tehran’s participation but noted continued skepticism within Iran due to alleged ceasefire violations by Israel.
The US delegation will be led by Vice President JD Vance, with reports suggesting the presence of senior officials including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
According to sources, the talks will focus on a broad roadmap for long-term peace, covering issues such as sanctions relief, regional security dynamics, and the future of Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes. Tehran is expected to push its proposed 10-point plan, which includes demands related to sanctions removal, security guarantees, and arrangements concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
Despite diplomatic momentum, deep mistrust persists, particularly over alleged violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon, complicating efforts to reach a lasting agreement.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has been actively involved in facilitating the talks, alongside senior officials including Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. Pakistan has positioned itself as a key intermediary, engaging global stakeholders to support peace efforts.
The developments are being closely watched worldwide, given their potential impact on regional stability, global energy markets, and international diplomacy.
Security has been significantly tightened in Islamabad ahead of the talks. Authorities have declared a two-day local holiday, while key areas, including the Red Zone, have been sealed off with restricted access.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi assured “foolproof security” for visiting delegations, stating that comprehensive arrangements have been put in place for their safety.
Police have announced traffic diversions across major routes, including the Express Highway, and advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel in high-security zones. Emergency services and hospitals have also been placed on high alert.
