Shafi Burfat, Chairman of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), strongly criticised the Pakistani military court’s decision to sentence former Army General and ex-ISI chief Faiz Hameed to 14 years in prison, calling it a “staged drama” designed to deceive the public and reinforce military dominance over politics.

In a post on X, Burfat described the verdict as largely symbolic, part of a psychological tactic to intimidate former Prime Minister Imran Khan and other political figures, rather than a genuine act of accountability.

Burfat accused Pakistan’s military of a long history of shielding its members from accountability for major atrocities, including the 1971 Bangladesh conflict, and alleged involvement in high-profile political assassinations, such as those of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Liaquat Ali Khan, and Murtaza Bhutto.

He also charged the military with systemic oppression in Balochistan, Sindh, and among Pashtun populations, describing Sindh as an “internal colony” subjected to resource exploitation, cultural erosion, and political suppression.

According to Burfat, Pakistan’s military has fostered extremism and terrorism over decades, acting as a proxy for global powers rather than a sovereign national institution. He claimed that Army Chief General Asim Munir enforces ideological extremism, abducts political activists through the ISI, and elevates himself above constitutional authority.

Burfat argued that the sentencing of Faiz Hameed is a “fabricated illusion of accountability” designed to protect the military while presenting the facade of justice. He described Pakistan as an “artificial state,” controlled by a corrupt and extremist military, and warned that the army’s control over the country’s nuclear arsenal poses a threat to regional and global security.
