Donald Trump has indicated to close aides that he is keen to avoid a prolonged conflict with Iran and is aiming to bring the situation to a conclusion within the next few weeks, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

Citing sources familiar with internal discussions, the report said Trump believes the conflict may be nearing its final phase and has urged advisers to adhere to a four-to-six-week timeline he has previously outlined in public statements. The timeline could conclude before a planned mid-May meeting with Xi Jinping.

Speaking at a fundraising event of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Trump claimed his administration had resolved multiple global conflicts and expressed confidence about achieving a similar outcome with Iran. He also suggested that Tehran is open to negotiations but hesitant to acknowledge it publicly.

Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasised that while the US prefers a peaceful resolution, it remains prepared for strong action if necessary. She said planned strikes on Iranian infrastructure were temporarily paused after indications that Tehran was willing to engage in talks.

Leavitt cautioned Iran against misjudging Washington’s stance, stating that previous confrontations had already resulted in significant losses for Tehran’s military capabilities. She reiterated that the US leadership is firm in its position and ready to escalate if diplomacy fails.

However, Iran has responded cautiously to a US-backed proposal for ending hostilities, asserting that any ceasefire would be determined on its own terms. Officials in Tehran maintained that their response would be guided by national interests and conditions on the ground, signalling no immediate shift in stance.
