US President Donald Trump on Thursday renewed his warning of military action against Iran, stating that the United States would launch a major strike against the country while continuing efforts to negotiate a broader peace agreement with Tehran.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the US would carry out a significant attack on Iran and suggested that Washington could eventually seek control over key elements of Iran's oil and gas infrastructure, including Kharg Island, a major hub for the country's crude oil exports.
Drawing a comparison with Venezuela, Trump argued that US involvement in the South American country's energy sector had been beneficial and indicated that a similar approach could be considered for Iran. He also claimed that Iran's military capabilities, including large parts of its air defence and offensive systems, had been severely weakened.
The remarks come amid escalating tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides exchanging military strikes over the past several days despite ongoing diplomatic contacts aimed at reaching a settlement.
A day earlier, Trump had signalled the possibility of renewed military operations, expressing frustration over what he described as delays by Iran in finalising an agreement with the United States. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said Washington was prepared to intensify its response and indicated that recent developments, including the reported downing of a US Apache helicopter, had further heightened tensions.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that American forces had carried out additional defensive operations targeting Iranian military infrastructure. According to the command, the strikes focused on surveillance systems, communications networks and air defence installations that were assessed as threats to US personnel and international maritime traffic in the region.
CENTCOM stated that forces from the US Marine Corps, Air Force and Navy participated in precision operations aimed at protecting American interests and ensuring freedom of navigation. It added that US forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to further developments.
Despite the heightened military activity, diplomatic efforts appear to be continuing. Reports indicate that indirect talks between the United States and Iran remain active, with negotiations continuing behind the scenes even as hostilities persist. Key issues under discussion reportedly include sanctions relief, access to frozen Iranian assets and broader security arrangements in the region.
