Mahinul Islam Majumder from Hailakandi in Assam’s Barak Valley has demonstrated that physical disability is no barrier when matched with determination and a strong will to succeed. He has put up an inspiring performance in the recently declared Assam High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) Examination 2026.

A resident of Narayanpur Part IV village near Hailakandi town, Mahinul studied at Sparrows Senior Secondary School. Despite severe physical challenges, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of education.

Mahinul is unable to stand or walk and depends on a tricycle for mobility. His condition has also weakened his arms over time. He suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a genetic neurodegenerative disorder that affects motor neurons in the spinal cord, leading to progressive muscle weakness and atrophy.

Yet, he has refused to let his condition define his limits. With unwavering determination, he continued his studies and appeared for the HSLC examination.

He narrowly missed securing a first division by just six marks but scored an impressive 88 in Computer Science. Determined to improve further, Mahinul has enrolled in a private senior secondary school in Hailakandi to pursue higher secondary education in the Arts stream. He aspires to join the Civil Services and serve society and the nation.

At this significant moment in his life, Mahinul expressed gratitude to his parents, teachers, and well-wishers for their constant support.

His father, Abdul Munim Majumder, a school teacher, and mother, Shahnaz Begum Majumder, a homemaker, expressed pride in his achievement. Abdul Munim said that his son’s determination to overcome physical limitations played a crucial role in his success.

Officials from the Hailakandi branch of Saksham, an organisation working for persons with disabilities, also visited Mahinul’s home to felicitate him. Shankar Choudhury and Govinda Chandra Nath praised his perseverance.
