Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap is set to offer readers a deeply personal look into his life and career through a forthcoming book titled Conversations With Anurag Kashyap, publisher Penguin Rendom House India announced on Friday.
Scheduled for release next year under the publisher’s Viking imprint, the book is based on a series of extensive and candid conversations between Kashyap and veteran film journalist Naman Ramachandran.
The volume traces Kashyap’s evolution from his early struggles in the film industry to becoming one of the most influential voices in contemporary Hindi cinema.
Speaking about the project, Kashyap said he had long resisted the idea of documenting his life, believing biographies should be written after a person’s death. However, he eventually agreed after persistent persuasion from Ramachandran, whose probing questions pushed him to revisit memories and experiences from across his career.
The book is divided into four sections — Anurag the Writer-Director, Anurag the Producer, Anurag the Actor, and Anurag the Personality — offering a comprehensive exploration of the many roles he has played in the film industry.
Known for landmark films such as Black Friday, Dev.D, Gangs of Wasseypur, Ugly, and Raman Raghav 2.0, Kashyap has often been credited with reshaping the landscape of independent and alternative filmmaking in India.
Ramachandran described the book as more than a conventional profile and more intimate than a standard biography. According to him, the conversations capture the filmmaker in his own voice, shaped by a long-standing friendship that allowed for complete honesty and openness.
The publisher said the book will not only explore Kashyap’s creative journey and artistic philosophy but will also use his experiences as a lens through which to examine the transformation of Indian cinema and the country’s broader social and cultural changes over the last two decades.
