Sony Pictures Entertainment has joined a growing protest against Seedance 2.0, the China-linked AI video platform accused by major Hollywood studios of enabling copyright infringement through AI-generated content, according to Variety.
In a cease-and-desist notice issued on Wednesday, the studio asked ByteDance to immediately remove copyrighted material, including content linked to Breaking Bad and the Spider-Verse film franchise from the platform’s AI training datasets.
Jill Ratner, General Counsel at Sony Pictures Entertainment, said the scale and nature of the AI outputs indicated “willful infringement,” citing the absence of adequate copyright safeguards at the platform’s launch.
Sony becomes the fifth major studio to formally challenge ByteDance, following similar objections from Disney, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. and Netflix.
While ByteDance has reportedly assured rights holders that stronger compliance systems and likeness protections are being developed, studios remain unconvinced, pressing for immediate and enforceable safeguards.
AI-generated clips from Seedance 2.0 have circulated widely online in recent days, with users creating crossover fight sequences and alternate storylines inspired by shows such as Game of Thrones and Stranger Things.

The Motion Picture Association representing the protesting studios along with Amazon and Universal was among the first to condemn the platform. CEO Charles Rivkin called for an immediate halt to alleged infringements earlier this month.
Netflix has also warned of potential legal action if its content is not removed promptly, signaling that the dispute could escalate into a broader industry legal battle over AI training and intellectual property rights.
