Imtiaz Ali’s Partition-era drama “Main Vaapas Aaunga” has emerged as an unexpected box office success, with strong word of mouth driving a notable surge in its second week after a slow opening.

The film, featuring Naseeruddin Shah, Diljit Dosanjh, Vedang Raina and Sharvari in lead roles, released on June 12 to positive critical reviews but initially recorded a modest start at the box office. However, audience appreciation and growing demand have significantly changed its trajectory in theatres across the country.

Trade website Sacnilk reported that the film registered its highest single-day collection on Day 10, earning a net ₹5.75 crore from 1,971 shows across India. With Monday’s addition of ₹2.50 crore, the film’s total domestic net collection now stands at ₹26.75 crore.

Exhibitors and distributors have responded to the rising demand by increasing the number of shows in several cities, reflecting the strengthening audience response and steady momentum.

Director Imtiaz Ali, known for acclaimed films such as “Jab We Met,” “Love Aaj Kal,” “Rockstar,” “Highway,” and “Amar Singh Chamkila,” said he is overwhelmed by the way audiences have embraced the film.

“Ultimately, ‘Janata janardan hai’. We always try to predict people… but I think people largely understand cinema. We should actually learn from them how to make and market films,” Ali told PTI.

The filmmaker said he has been travelling across cities and visiting cinemas to observe audience reactions firsthand.

“I am overwhelmed by the response… I have been to six cities already and planning to go to more,” he said.

Ali also expressed gratitude to exhibitors and distributors for responding swiftly to audience demand by increasing screenings, including shows at unconventional time slots.

“In this journey, I have realised the amazing connection between audience and exhibitors… the trade has stepped up and supported Main Vaapas Aaunga as though it is their film,” he said.

The film, which features music by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Irshad Kamil, is set in contemporary India and narrated through the memories of a 95-year-old man. His grandson pieces together fragments of Partition history, trauma and enduring love.

Actor Sharvari also took to Instagram to celebrate the film’s growing success, sharing behind-the-scenes images and expressing gratitude for the audience response.

“I don’t know if there’s a greater feeling than seeing something you poured your heart into find a place in other people’s hearts,” she wrote, thanking viewers for their emotional engagement with the film.
