Some unidentified persons desecrated the statue of Dr B R Ambedkar at Jalandhar Bypass Chowk here, following which members of various Valmiki organisations gave a call for Ludhiana bandh on Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening when some individuals desecrated the statue, sparking anger among the Valmiki community.

A heavy police force was deployed at many places in Ludhiana following the bandh call.

Members of the various Valmiki organisations gathered near Jalandhar Bypass on Wednesday, raising slogans and demanding arrest of persons responsible for the vandalism.

Police said efforts were underway to identify and nab the accused, as they appealed to people to maintain peace.
