Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will return to power in Assam with a decisive mandate, predicting a “thumping majority” of more than 90 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Speaking to reporters after a roadshow in Guwahati, Shah said the people of the state are eager to re-elect the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government for a third consecutive term.
“We are going to form the government in Assam once again with a thumping majority for the third time... We will form the government with more than 90 seats,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Shah led a massive roadshow in the city, drawing large crowds as the BJP intensified its campaign. Supporters lined the streets, and the Union Minister greeted them by showering flower petals, energising party workers and showcasing the party’s outreach efforts.
The political atmosphere in the northeastern state is heating up as campaigning gathers pace ahead of the polls. Voting for all 126 Assembly constituencies is scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, while counting of votes will take place on May 4, according to the Election Commission of India.
The election will see a direct contest between the incumbent BJP-led NDA government and the Indian National Congress. The ruling government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, is aiming to secure a third straight term, while the Congress is seeking to return to power.
