A member of a foreigners tribunal in Assam's Udalguri district has been arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe to grant bail to a person, a police statement said.
An FIR was lodged at Mazbat Police Station against the accused on August 29, alleging that he had demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant in connection with granting bail in a foreigners tribunal case, police said on Thursday.
Foreigners tribunals are quasi-judicial bodies designed to determine whether a person suspected of being an illegal immigrant is a foreigner.
The accused, Bhupen Chandra Pegu, was arrested on September 19, the police statement said.
The case was registered under section 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita that pertains to extortion.
