Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said the state is steadily progressing towards becoming a Rs 10 lakh crore economy by 2028.

Addressing the Assam Legislative Assembly, Sarma said Assam’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has grown from around Rs 4 lakh crore in 2021-22 to an estimated Rs 8.72 lakh crore at present, registering an annual growth rate between 13 and 15 per cent.

He said the rapid economic expansion has positioned Assam to make a major contribution towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India into a USD 5 trillion economy.

Earlier, on February 2, the Ministry of Finance had stated that Assam received Rs 5.61 lakh crore through tax devolution and central grants-in-aid between 2014 and 2026.

The ministry had also noted that the state received more than Rs 17,000 crore as interest-free loans under the Scheme of Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI). Under the scheme, Assam has been receiving 50-year interest-free loans from the Centre for the creation of durable infrastructure.

According to the ministry, these funds are over and above the recommendations made by the Finance Commission.

Between financial years 2020 and 2026, up to January 12, 2026, Assam received Rs 17,104 crore under the SASCI scheme, which has supported large-scale infrastructure development and asset creation across the state.

Meanwhile, Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora on Monday tabled “The Uniform Civil Code, Assam Bill, 2026” in the state assembly on behalf of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
