Assam polls: Key opposition leaders trail in early counting trends

Several prominent opposition leaders in Assam, including Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Akhil Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Jagadish Bhuyan and Rajen Gohain, were trailing in their respective constituencies in the initial counting trends released by the Election Commission on Monday.

Congress leader Saikia was behind by 4,967 votes in the Nazira seat of Sivasagar district. After the second round, BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain had secured 11,607 votes, compared to Saikia’s 6,640.

Raijor Dal chief and sitting MLA Akhil Gogoi, contesting from Sibsagar, was also trailing after the first round, polling 3,262 votes against BJP’s Kushal Dowari, who had 5,171 votes. AGP candidate Prodip Hazarika, an NDA ally, had received 443 votes in the same constituency.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi was also behind his BJP rival. After three rounds, Gogoi had 11,845 votes, while BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi led with 14,360 votes.

AJP general secretary Jagadish Bhuyan was trailing by 5,759 votes in Sadiya following the second round. He secured 5,071 votes, whereas BJP’s Bolin Chetia had polled 10,830.

Former Union minister Rajen Gohain, who recently joined the AJP from the BJP, was also trailing in his constituency, with 2,570 votes against BJP MLA Jitu Goswami’s 5,324.

In contrast, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal was leading in the Binnakandi seat of Hojai district. After three rounds, he was ahead by 2,869 votes over AJP candidate Rejaul Karim Chowdhury, polling 13,298 votes compared to Chowdhury’s 10,429. AGP’s Shahab Uddin Majumdar had secured 2,537 votes in the constituency.
