Vijay—widely known as “Thalapathy” (Commander in the Tamil Language)—has emerged as a decisive political force in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, with his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) reportedly leading in over 100 seats. His rapid political ascent marks one of the most dramatic developments in the state’s contemporary politics.
At 51, Vijay stands out as perhaps the first major Tamil film star in recent decades to consciously step away from a thriving film career to pursue politics full-time. While Tamil Nadu has a long tradition of actors entering politics, few have done so at the peak of their cinematic success with such a clear and declared political commitment.
Born as Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar, he is the son of filmmaker S. A. Chandrasekhar and singer-writer Shoba Chandrasekhar. His father, known for his socially conscious films, is often described as having left-leaning ideological influences—something observers believe may have shaped Vijay’s early worldview.
If Vijay converts the current electoral momentum into a victory, he will be following a well-established Tamil Nadu tradition where cinema icons transition into mass political leaders—a legacy associated with figures like M. G. Ramachandran and J. Jayalalithaa. However, unlike some contemporaries such as Kamal Haasan—whose political journey has so far yielded limited electoral success—Vijay appears to have carefully calibrated his entry into politics.

He formally launched Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in 2024 and positioned it as an ideological challenger to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin. Unlike many new entrants who rely on alliances, Vijay chose to contest independently, projecting TVK as a fresh alternative in a state long dominated by Dravidian parties.
Speculation has occasionally surfaced about a possible alignment with the Indian National Congress, but Vijay has so far kept his political strategy guarded, avoiding any explicit commitments.

Vijay’s political rise is underpinned by a formidable film career spanning over three decades. He has appeared in 69 films as a lead actor and is among India’s highest-paid stars. Known for delivering multiple box-office successes, his films enjoy a massive fan following not just in Tamil Nadu but globally—an appeal that has been further amplified by the growth of OTT platforms.
Even Hindi film viewers know his stardom through dubbed movies like Master, Sarkar, Beast, and Holiday.
He began his journey as a child actor in the 1984 film Vetri and later played his first lead role in Naalaiya Theerpu at the age of 18. Over the years, he has delivered several blockbuster films, cementing his position as one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable stars.
Educated at Loyola College, Vijay enrolled in a visual communication programme but dropped out to focus entirely on his acting career—a decision that ultimately paved the way for his immense success in cinema.
