When disaster strikes, it often brings out the best in humanity. Assam’s devastating floods, which have claimed at least 75 lives and displaced thousands across the state's upper districts, have triggered an extraordinary nationwide relief effort. Social media influencers, corporate leaders, actors, civil society organisations and volunteers have converged on the flood-ravaged region, carrying not just food, drinking water and inflatable boats, but also compassion and hope.

The unprecedented outpouring of support comes even as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has maintained that Assam does not require foreign assistance to tackle the humanitarian crisis.

Among the first to reach the affected areas was social media influencer Hussain Mansuri, who has been leading relief operations with a team of volunteers. Videos shared online show him coordinating rescue efforts and distributing essential supplies to families whose homes have been swept away by the floodwaters.

While helping others is in the ethos of India, the expansion of communication through air and road and social media has expanded this effort into a major act over the years. Earlier we saw volunteers of religious and social groups, actors join hands to help Kerala and then Punjab deal with a similar crisis.

Ananya Birla, who leads the Birla Foundation and owner of RBS team of IPL, was seen on the ground not only distribution food and stuff the flood victims would needs but also comforting the devastated people.
