West Bengal Governor R N Ravi will address students of Calcutta University on Tuesday on the causes and consequences of the communal violence the city witnessed in August 1946, the Lok Bhavan said.

The riot is remembered as Direct Action Day and the Great Calcutta Killings.

The Lok Bhavan said the commemorative event was being organised to sensitise students about the "dark chapter" in the country's history.

"The four-day ghastly communal violence from August 16, 1946, unleashed by the then Muslim League government of Bengal holds crucial lessons for the unity, integrity and prosperity of the nation which our youth must be aware of," it said.
