Bharat Forge Ltd on Friday announced that it has secured a ₹425-crore contract from the Ministry of Defence for supplying gas turbine generators to the Indian Navy for onboard power generation on Kolkata-class warships.
The company said the project will be executed over a period of five years.
Under the agreement, Bharat Forge will set up a dedicated integration and testing facility for the gas turbine generators. It will also take part in design and development initiatives for larger power plants and propulsion-based gas turbine systems in the future.
The company stated that the project will enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities and contribute to self-reliance in defence technology. It added that the infrastructure being developed will also support the broader requirements of the Indian Armed Forces and ensure in-country maintenance and overhaul of gas turbines and generator systems.
The contract has been awarded under the Buy (Indian) category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020. It marks Bharat Forge’s entry into the marine gas turbine segment and represents the first indigenous gas turbine-based power system to be deployed on Indian Naval vessels.
