Bhupendra Patel has been elected as the new Chief Minister of Gujarat in place of Vijay Rupani who had tendered his resignation.

He was elected unanimously at the meeting of the BJP legislature party at 3pm.

The BJP's central observors Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Pralhad Joshi were present in the meeting og the Gujarat BJP when his name was proposed and it was supported by all.

His election comes a day after Vijay Rupani tendered his resignation from the post of chief minister and a year before Gujarat will go to elections.

Patel is a MLA from Ghatlodia.

His is s surprise election as his name was never discussed earlier as repleacement oRupani who had been appointed in 2016.

He is likely to stake his claim to form the government by Monday.
