Leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Indian National Congress after Assam MP Pradyut Bordoloi quit the Congress and joined the BJP ahead of the state Assembly elections.
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said the Congress was “on the way to its end,” suggesting more leaders could exit the party. “It won’t be surprising if Gaurav Gogoi resigns next,” he remarked.
Upendra Kushwaha, chief of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, also criticised the Congress, alleging poor internal functioning and lack of leadership clarity in states like Bihar.
Echoing similar sentiments, BJP MP Manan Kumar Mishra claimed the Congress leadership had lost control over its legislators and that the party was “on the verge of collapse.”
Bordoloi joined the BJP in the presence of Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia. Explaining his decision, Bordoloi cited “multiple issues” and alleged internal mistreatment within the Congress, saying self-respect was a key factor behind his resignation.
He clarified that his exit was not solely due to ticket allocation for the Assembly polls, adding that he chose to leave despite having three years remaining in his Lok Sabha term.
The political development comes ahead of the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, scheduled to be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting of votes on May 4.

The elections will see a contest between the BJP-led NDA, seeking a third consecutive term under Sarma, and the Congress, which aims to return to power in the 126-seat Assembly.
