The resignation of Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi has triggered sharp political reactions, with the Indian National Congress calling it “unfortunate” and the Bharatiya Janata Party claiming it reflects the opposition’s declining base.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said Bordoloi may have been upset over ticket distribution and expressed regret over his decision.

“It is unfortunate. I wish we had a chance to have a conversation,” she said.

Party MP Imran Masood added that efforts would be made to persuade Bordoloi to reconsider, stressing that ideological compromise would not be appropriate.

The BJP, however, used the development to target the Congress. MP Nishikant Dubey said the party was weakening, while Dinesh Sharma claimed growing public support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi was drawing people towards the BJP.

Another BJP leader, Damodar Agarwal, likened the Congress to a “sinking boat,” suggesting leaders were seeking better political prospects.

Bordoloi, a Lok Sabha MP from Assam’s Nagaon constituency, resigned from the Congress just weeks before the state Assembly elections. In his resignation letter to party president Mallikarjun Kharge, he expressed “overwhelming sadness” while quitting all party posts and primary membership.

A senior leader in Assam politics, Bordoloi was chairman of the party’s manifesto committee for the upcoming polls and has served as a four-time MLA from Margherita.

His resignation reportedly followed disagreements over candidate selection, including opposition to the possible renomination of a sitting MLA.
