Newly elected legislators in West Bengal, including Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, were sworn in as members of the state assembly on Wednesday. The oath of office was administered by pro tem Speaker Tapas Roy in the 294-member West Bengal Legislative Assembly in Kolkata.
Among those who took oath were newly inducted ministers—Agnimitra Paul, Dilip Ghosh, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu, and Nisith Pramanik—who also formally assumed their roles as MLAs.
On his first day in the Assembly as chief minister, Adhikari paid floral tributes to the statue of B. R. Ambedkar within the Assembly premises and was accorded a ceremonial guard of honour.
In a symbolic gesture before entering the House, Adhikari knelt at the entrance and touched his forehead to the ground.
Adhikari, who led the Bharatiya Janata Party to its first-ever electoral victory in West Bengal, won from both the Bhabanipur and Nandigram constituencies in the recently concluded Assembly elections.
