Congress observers for Kerala, Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, on Friday said the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the state had unanimously passed a resolution authorising the party leadership to choose its leader, with a detailed report now submitted to the central leadership.

Addressing the media, Maken said the observers were deputed to Kerala immediately after the Assembly election results were declared on May 4, along with AICC general secretary in charge Deepa Dasmunshi.

He said a CLP meeting was held on May 7, during which all legislators unanimously adopted a one-line resolution empowering the Congress high command to take the final decision on the selection of the CLP leader.

Maken added that the observers also held individual discussions with party MLAs to gather their views and feedback.

“Each MLA shared their opinions, and we carefully recorded not just the names suggested but also other observations and concerns. The entire report has now been submitted to the party leadership,” he said.

Responding to reports surrounding a viral photograph that allegedly showed Congress leader Mukul Wasnik carrying a list of MLAs purportedly linked to the selection of Kerala’s next chief minister, Wasnik dismissed the speculation.

“I have seen the image. It does not reflect the actual situation. The claims being made are incorrect and not based on facts,” he said.

Maken and Wasnik were appointed by the Congress leadership as observers for Kerala following the election results.

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a decisive victory in the Kerala Assembly elections, comfortably crossing the majority mark of 71 seats in the 140-member House, marking a significant comeback after a decade of Left Democratic Front (LDF) rule.

According to the latest figures, the Indian National Congress emerged as the single largest contributor to the alliance’s success, winning 63 seats.

While anti-incumbency against the 10-year-old LDF government had been anticipated, the scale of the UDF’s victory has drawn considerable political attention.

In the 2016 Assembly elections, the LDF under Pinarayi Vijayan had won 91 seats, while the UDF secured 47 seats. The BJP had opened its account in the state with one seat.
