A 25-year-old biker died after his motorcycle allegedly fell into an uncovered pit dug for Delhi Jal Board (DJB) work in the Janakpuri area of the national capital on Thursday night, police said. The deceased has been identified as Kamal Dhyani.
The incident came to light on Friday morning after a local resident alerted the police about a body lying inside a nearly 15-foot-deep pit. Police later recovered the body along with the motorcycle.
The victim’s family alleged negligence and delay in police response. Dhyani’s brother claimed that despite visiting multiple police stations during the night, they did not receive adequate assistance and were informed about his death only after police answered a call made to the victim’s phone in the morning.
According to family members, Dhyani had spoken to them late Thursday night and said he would reach home shortly. When repeated calls went unanswered, relatives and friends began searching for him across the area, including Janakpuri and Rohini. They alleged that police shared only a broad location and did not provide precise tracking details, hampering rescue efforts.
A friend of the deceased said a group of seven people searched the area throughout the night but failed to locate him. He alleged that the pit was checked around 1 am but the victim was not visible at the time, raising questions about how and when the accident occurred.
Responding to the allegations, DCP West Sharad Bhaskar said the pit was dug as part of a Delhi Jal Board project and that police had initiated tracking efforts after the family reported Dhyani missing around 2:45 am. He said a head constable searched the area with family members for nearly two-and-a-half hours but could not locate the victim.
“At around 8 am, a woman informed the police about a body lying in the pit. An FIR is being registered and all stakeholders involved in the Jal Board work will be investigated,” Bhaskar said, adding that claims of inadequate police assistance would be examined.
Delhi Minister Ashish Sood, who visited the site, expressed grief over the incident and said strict action would be taken against any DJB official found responsible for violating safety norms.
The Delhi Jal Board also expressed condolences and announced the formation of a committee to probe the incident. In a post on X, DJB assured that strict action would be taken if negligence is established at any level.
BJP MP Ramvir Singh Bidhuri demanded accountability, stating that such negligence would not be tolerated in the national capital.
